Hi Tom,
To upgrade to rear electric windows, which parts would be needed besides the door panels, switches F/R and window motors? Would that only be the cables and connectors? And do you make these yourself? What would be the amount of time needed for this upgrade?
Cheers, Hans Jan
HI Hans Jan,
Sorry for the delayed reply - life got a bit hectic!
Retrofitting rear electric windows rquires...
Parts
2x replacement rear window frames (left and right)
2x rear door control module (DCM) with motor (left and right)
2x door panels with single window switches (left and right)
1x driver's door master switch with 4 window switches
1x driver's door master switch plastic surround
Wiring Looms
2x rear door loom, from B-pillar to DCM (left and right)
2x rear door loom, from DCM to door lock (left and right)
2x rear door loom, from DCM to door panel single switch
1x driver's door loom, from driver's DCM to master switch
2x interior looms, from B-pillar to central electrics
The parts in
italics are the only things that I do not have. Of course, if you can find all the things needed for the retrofit, that's great. But if time is running out, I can probably help.
The looms in
bold are the only ones that I need to make. All the others are Audi parts.
The looms from the B-pillar to the DCM, which also carry the audio to the rear speakers, come in a few different varieties. Audi changed the connector designs between 2001 and 2002 BJ. For me to make the two looms that cannot be purchased, I would need to know which variety of looms you purchased. Audi also changed the wiring arrangements inside the connectors, but I can easily correct this.
The complete retrofit involves rebuilding the rear doors with the replacement window frames, wiring looms, electronics and door panels. There's lots of soldering required inside the car to add the fabricated looms and effectively convert the central locking system from working with 2 DCMs (front doors only) to 4 DCMs (all door fully electric). This also requires software changes, of course. Between starting and finishing the process, the car will not lock.
I've done the conversion many times before, but it still takes a full work day.
Cheers,
Tom
